BOWLED OVER
a socially engaged community project in ceramics and food security

Bowled Over is a social engagement project in collaboration with the student-run club - the clay c0ven and the SoVA ceramics area, with the support of Arts & Design Research Incubator at Penn State University. Bowled Over is in line with Penn State’s broader “tackle hunger” initiative to address food insecurity across the commonwealth campuses.
Students designed and produced a limited edition series of handmade ceramic bowls for this project. Originally, plans were made to sell the bowls at a special event. Due to COVID-19 limitations, the bowls are available for purchase online for a limited time. Proceeds from Bowled Over will benefit The Lion’s Pantry and the clay c0ven.

Kris Grey

Shannon Goff
Associate Professor of Art, School of Visual Arts
Audrey An
2nd-Year Graduate Student
During her time at Penn State, Audrey’s objectives will be around the question of - how to hybridize digital fabrication technologies to ceramic creativity from the perspective of ‘convergence’, which could be cultural, technological, dimensional, or interdisciplinary.
For the Bowled Over project, Audrey worked as the graphic designer and publicist. She designed promotional materials, decals on bowls, and this website! She also regularly posts for our Instagram page.
Austin Bradshaw
2nd-Year Graduate Student
Austin creates mixed media artworks utilizing both digital and analog processes that draw off of his personal memories and experiences in the outdoors.
For the Bowled Over project, Austin was in charge of the custom box design, CNC-mill operation, and assembly.
Harrison Boden
1st-Year Graduate Student
Harrison is an interdisciplinary artist primarily working in ceramics and sculpture. His studio practice is centered around questioning belonging and place while balancing ideas of beauty and the abject.
For the Bowled Over project, Harrison served as the lovely hand model as well as contributed to decal design and application.
Anna Graef
Senior Undergraduate Student
Anna is interested in function, utility, absurdity, practicality, efficiency, and humor. She uses ceramic and other media in her attempts both to subvert expectations of function, and to inspire childlike wonder.
For the Bowled Over project, Anna worked with Andrew to throw, trim, glaze, decal and fire the bowls.
Andrew Castaneda
Instructor of Art
Andrew Castaneda grew up in sunny California. His work is spontaneous and half the time he doesn’t even know what he is doing. His openness to new ideas, material and techniques help keep his work fresh. Andrew is in two private collections The American Museum of Ceramic Arts at Pomona, CA and the Kansas City Art Institute Teaching Collection. Andrew like to travel and get lost in other environments. He loves meeting new people, places and materials. He finds inspiration in the most minuet details.
For the Bowled Over project, Andrew worked with Anna to throw, trim, glaze, decal and fire the bowls.
